The BEST THINGS to Do While Visiting the Hawaiian Islands!!

Honolulu CountyALOHA! Welcome to Our World..... A PARADISE awaits you!

Seems like everyone wants to visit Honolulu, Hawaii at one point in their life. Why? Ahhhhh...the tropical breezes in balmy weather looking up at sunny blue skies in a land of paradise. Typically, the imagery in a ones mind who has not ever stepped foot on our fine grains of sand splattered on beaches lining the edges of our islands is one of a continuous 'ancient era'.

Running barefoot on the beaches where my grass shack residence surely lay, I have endless days of sipping Mai Tai drinks with the little umbrellas poked through the slivers of pineapple slices that adorn the edge of the glass. Zap! There were no grass shacks along Waikiki beach although there were hotels and buildings that were reaching towards the skies to accomodate the tourists that arrived each day to enjoy our island paradise.

So....what is one to do while visiting Honolulu, Hawaii? What kind of interests are there for the person or families that are Relocating to Honolulu, Hawaii

  • My first suggestion for ALL who visit, reside and retire in Honolulu, Hawaii is to first soak in all the history that you are able. The rich history of ancient warriors, many heiau (hey ee ow..... temples), and lore that adorn every inch of our island is something you will remember for years to come. It will give you insight on the diversity of our islands.  The history will tell you how it came about that we have so many ethinicities that make up our ever changing population. Read more here:  Downtown Honolulu's Historic Sites and Points of Interest
  • Sightseeing! Drive around the island and catch all the sites! From beaches, to caves to botanical gardens and to the Dole Plantation on the way to the North Shore (famous Surfing area) there are many wonderful sites for pictures worth a thousand words. • Plan on flying to one or two of the other islands too!  We flew to Kauai in May 2008 and I hadn't been there for quite a MANY years. READ MORE ABOUT ONE PART OF MY TRIP HERE:  Waimea Canyon on Kauai - It Took My Breath Away....Literally  (there is also a short video for you to Honolulu County-Waikikiexperience!) Kauai is known as the Garden Isle and Mt. Waialea on Kauai is the 'wettest spot in the world'!
  • How about going to some places around the Waikiki, Diamond Head area? the Honolulu Zoo, the Waikiki Aquarium and Diamond Head Crater are all around the same vicinity and The Bus (click for info) system here is great to travel around from site to site.
  • Entertainment, Shopping & Food!:
    • The Star of Honolulu has many different DINNER SHOW PACKAGES to pick from. So, remember, you don't have to be a tourist to go out and enjoy the finer things while in Hawaii!
    • Hawaii's Whale Watching Tours (In spiritual Hawaiian custom the Whales are the essense of the ocean) and Swim with the Dolphins (Sea Life Park)
    • Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park!  Now this is a place to go for the whole family.  (provided you love to get wet!) 25 acres of speed and shotgun slides, the Cliffhanger, Water playground, Keiki (children's) cove, picnics, and more!  Just make reservations and they will do all the planning and coordinating for you!  All you have to do is show up and have fun! There are also volleyball courts, lawn games, dunk tank, horse shoe pits, private pavilions for you and your family. Weddings? No problem!
    • Aloha Stadium Swap Meet and the Pearlridge Kam Swap Meet are great places for outdoor shopping for souvenirs, clothing, polynesian style crafts and much more. Way cheaper than buying in Waikiki that's for sure! Open on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
    • RESTAURANT'S CYBERGUIDE is a full on guide of all restaurants on all islands in Hawaii that were recognized and most of them received awards.  So, with all the information I have given you all week you can add this one to it.  You can add this article to your list for planning your trip (or relocating) to Hawaii along with the foods you're going to try as soon as you get here!

One day I will get to HI and I will call you for my own tour! No grass huts, though?

You're funny Gary....thanks for dropping by and if you ever make it this way....CALL!

Sis - The History is worth it in of itself, I'm sure.  Though, I'd love to be running down those beaches:-)  I must visit someday, a taste of Paradise indeed!

( 06/17/08 02:37PM ) — Kelly Sibilsky

I love whale watching...that would be a highlight for me! :)

( 06/17/08 02:45PM ) — LLoyd Nichols~SW Florida Homes

Sis, this is a monster post with a huge amount of information. Your genuine enthousiam for Honolulu makes one want to visit your well known island. There is nothing like kicking back on a tropical beach. I still wonder what the zoning code is for these grass huts. Seriously: what should one expect to pay for a smaller home with a beach view? I don't mean waterfront. Just a beach vista.

Sally--Now I know just what to do if I ever get out your way! :)

I'm still waiting for my free ticket!

Sally,
This post should be read by everyone planning a visit or a move to Hawaii...an amazing amount of information and expertly presented. Like I've said before, the Government of Hawaii should be having all of their island information brochures and online sites written by you.

Jo

Wow, Sally, I would have to allow more then just a few days there, what a wonderful list of things to see and do!  I just might stay awhile, I'm hoping I'll have the best tour guide in Hawaii--you!

( 06/17/08 06:04PM ) — Lisa Hill (Daytona Beach Real Estate)

I don't like the sun and I pass out when I get hot (Ironic, for someone whose spent their entire life in FL), so I usually want to vacation where it's cooler, and cloudier. Go figure. But then I read your part about whale watching. Now that sounds like fun! We like to go the the springs around here and watch the manatee =)

Great overview, Sally. With all that there is to do how could anyhone be bored? It would take days and days to get it all done. Terrific post for buyers and folks who are visiting.

Aloha, and Maholo.  I've visited 12 times or so, I've not spent much time around Honolulu, I LOVE Kaui, spent a lot of time around Lahaina, and recently found the Big Island grand for all it's diversity.  Thanks for the memories!!!

( 06/17/08 07:55PM ) — George Souto

Sally I know what I would do in Honolulu.  I would sit around watching the Hula Girls by day and eat my fill of pineapples by night.  I would be one FAT happy boy by the time I got back ............. LOL

Hey Lil Bro: I know that you surely must be interested in visiting one day...who knows...I might just adopt you :)

Kelly: I'm seriously considering doing the cruise for whale watching...or ride the Superferry....(fares are lower than air!)

Lloyd: There was just NO WAY to do a shorter post...too many things to see!  People are under the assumption that with small islands there isn't anything to do... :)  :)  In any case..  the 'smaller' homes with a view would still be more than what you are used to...believe me. :)

Teri: This is just the tip of the iceberg!

Neal: You mean you're going to get a free ticket?  Wow...that someone sure likes you :)

Hi Sally,

One of these days I will get to Hawaii, maybe a surprise visit....;)

Sally- ah, to add to the list, the Polynesian Culteral Center. That is one great history learning and cultural appreciation day and dinner. Can't wait to go do it again.

Jo: Ah....overdone (okay, maybe well done) as usual with a challenge such as this. You surely made it one I dove right in to!!! Thanks Jo!

Carole: If you do come here you can count on me to MAKE the time to be your tour guide. That's a promise!

Lisa: I get hot as well....may have to do with the fibro too ya think?  In any case we just drive around and jump out and take pictures for the scenery stuff. And it usually is cool in the shade anyway :)

Jeff: Thanks so much..you only got a taste....you gotta come back with that beautiful wife of yours to second honeymoon it. :)

Greg: You might as well move here :)  I'm so glad you were able to get more each time you came.... I have a load of satisfaction just taking a cruise around :)

George: You won't get fat on pineapples but all the other goodies you will!  Hmmm...I have a craving for Hawaiian food right about now. My mom, daughter and I went to lunch today and had Japanese food....such an array of food I tell ya!

Suzanne: Good....remember to bring me a black and white list of foods. I found Blue Bunny Creamsicle Bars....70 calories and no fat, no sugar.....I'm in heaven :)

Katerina: The mention of Polynesian Cultural Center is in the show...did you watch?

Sally...your local Chamber of Commerce should be suplementing your income! You should see if they might want to purchase some of your posts for their Info.Centers videos!

Joan: Yeah...everyone keeps telling me that....I like just doing this for my clients...future clients and just people who want to know :)

Hi Sally, Woo Hoo, This is the type of post that so differentiates you. Spectacular! It is a Travel Show all in itself. The Dept. of Tourism should pay you. I would like to be your agent, if that position hasn't been spoken for, lol. Then of course I could retire there, lol

PS, My post is back. You needn't go there though because you already commented,LMAO.

Hey William!  OH, I LOVE doing these Localism posts....it is the very essence of ....ME LOL!  I think I just like giving the beauty to everyone.... so...when are you folks planning a trip?

Sally, what a great post.  My brother was stationed there recently, I wish I had had your post when I visited for 4 short days.  I bet your post gets tons of Localism traffic.  Congrats!!

Sally, I think the best kept secret is John Dominis in Kakaako.  Malama pono

Elena: Thanks a bunch! Well..if you ever come back..let me know!

Leolinda: Alan Wong's is another :)

Woo-Hoo: I have to admit, Hawaii MUST be paradise!  Someday...I hope...I get to visit!

P.S.  You're really getting good with the Flip

Sally - perfect timing - off to check out all the great places to see when we're there! Thanks for being our local EXPERT!

Kat...one day.....one day. :)

Cyndee: Woo Hoooooooo...see you soon!!!

Beautiful photography and a terrific video.

Great job for a great place.

Richard

One of my favorite places in the world.........not hard to find 5, 50 or 500 things to do!  :-) Love it!

Thanks Richard!

Liz: Most think that a small island would not have much to do....I beg to differ!

I want to visit Hawaii tomorrow.  Great post and very compelling.

Hi Sally,

It would be fun to visit Hawaii again--I was born in Honolulu (marine-corp brat). My family moved to Carlsbad, California when I was eight. What I remember the most is the beautiful flowers and trees, and of course the beach. I also remember the tropical showers--now, those were impressive!

You did a great job on this post! Thanks for all the suggestions, pics and video.

Aloha!

Hi There....

Did you forget to sign in?  That's okay...thanks for the nice compliment...and I'm so glad some find this useful!

Sally - Your post is full of so much info.  Makes me want to hop on the first plane and come visit.

Sally...enticing informaion as usual...someday I really hope to go there!

Sally - Darn you... now I really want to come back to Hawaii! What a terrific post. Great job!

I see you had a hard time narrowing it down to 5 - that's understandable.... so much to do and see in our island paradise... better stay for a few weeks at least.

Sally, this is a really good "travelogue"!  I wish I could visit some of the beautiful places you describe.

Brian: Make your wish come true :)

Georgina: Yeah...they think it's a bunch of small islands...but we know how rich our culture is...and how history plays a huge part in the make up of ...the Hawaiian Islands :)

Tom: You will...you will. :)

Joan: Bring your brother and cook us up some wonderful dishes :)

Pam: Great...I hope everyone else feels the same too :)

Congrats to the Queen of Localism.....!  :-)  Awesome post and you're the bestest!  :-)

( 07/07/08 10:20PM ) — Dawn Maloney, ABR

Sally, Sooo beautiful. We want to come this year - we shall see if everything works out. We will definitely stop in and say hi. Jay was born in Honolulu - his mom worked at the Dole Plantation and his dad did a lot of parachuting as a Marine...we just want to see it and enjoy it. Thanks for the mini-trip!

Sally:  I lived in HI and visited a few times.  This post is a great starting point to see what the beautiful Island has to offer. The cyber restaurant link was a great addition.  One of my favorite places to visit was the blow holes - not sure what the name of the spot is acturally called, I could sit there for hours and just be amazed what nature does.  I have a friend getting stationed to HI and I will pass this post on.  Keep up the great post for your area, you do a wonderful job.

( 07/08/08 11:46AM ) — Kathy McGraw

Sally-Congratulations on not only entering this wonderful info packed blog post into a Contest, but then winning as well.  A truely well deserved win I must say :)  I absolutely love the links you provide, the videos to show the area, but also the commentary from someone that not just lives in Hawaii, but truly has the Aloha Spirit......way to go.

Sally - Thank you for the trip down memory lane.  We visited Hawaii a couple years ago, and saw a few of many sites you mentioned.  Hawaii is definitely paradise and I'm looking forward to coming back.

I definitely need more than a week.

Hi Sally,

Congratulations on a beautiful post!! You did a really nice job of sharing your corner of the world. I love the picture of Diamond Head--I still remember being a little girl (a long time ago) and looking-up at it from the beach--brings back memories....

Bravo!!

( 08/23/08 04:36PM ) — Linda Le - Hawaii Loan Officer

Sally, thank you for reminding me to "soak in all the history".  I've lived in Hawaii for about 7 years now and still have not done everything that Hawaii has to offer.  thanks for the reminder!

( 09/02/08 10:40PM ) — Pat Preston

Wow...this is still going....Thanks to all who came by.....shucks...I missed Bill's way back when :)
