Take another look at Hawaii islands hotels. Many are offering discounted rates on Hawaii room rates through 2009. The Outrigger Waikiki is promoting room rates of $159 through 2009.
The Sheraton Waikiki is offering the 5th night free. Those in the travel industry say the new standard is the 3rd night free. Ask and see what happens. If these two Hawaii hotels are offering discounts and specials, you can be sure the others are as well.
This month, Hawaii’s hotel occupancy rate posted an 8-year low according to Hospitality Advisors. The occupancy rate is now at about 61 percent. That is the lowest since September 2001.
Rates for rooms in Honolulu Hawaii have held fairly steady as well as the number of days that visitors stay. Although Japanese visitor arrivals (-15.5%) and visitor days (-12.3%) declined by double digits in December 2008, total visitor spending by this group was up 4.4 percent to $191.2 million due to higher daily spending (up from $270 per person per day to $322 per person per day in December 2008). Interestingly, December 2008 is the first month this year in which Canadian visitor days showed a year-over-year decline (-6.3%).
