Becoming an Outdoors Woman

My wife Nicole completed the Iowa Hunter Safety Education Program this year and Turkey hunted this Spring for the first time. We were able to have many enjoyable outdoor experiences together despite her not filling her tag. It gave us some great memories and something to work on this Summer while we look forward to this fall when Iowa deer season rolls around.

Now Nicole is a little nervous about shooting guns, after all most of those big guns were made to be shot by men. She has a tendency to get frustrated when I teach her because she is nervous and even a little scared. I wanted to find a way for her to enhance her skills in an environment she could be comfortable. I came across the BOW program.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources participates in a program called BOW or Becoming an Outdoors-Woman and holds a workshop every year for women interested in learning outdoors skills. This program is specifically for woman that are interested in learning outdoor skills or improving outdoor skills while interacting with other like minded women.

Women choose from 20 different activities during the weekend long workshop and are able to learn in the company of other beginners. Some of the workshops include basic fishing, muzzleloading, fly fishing, birdwatching, archery, nature photography, beginning shooting, basic motor boat skills, orienteering and map reading, GPS, kayaking, canoeing, camping, Dutch oven cooking, dog handling, and backpacking. Each year over 20,000 women attend this workshop world wide. 40 states in the US as well as foreign countries have adopted this program which started at the University of Wisconsin in 1991.

This program is a great way to get your wife or daughter or other family member involved in Iowa's great recreational opportunities and introduce them to shooting sports in a safe and stress free environment.

This years Iowa BOW workshop will be held September 14-16th at the Springbrook Conservation Education Center at 2473 160th Road, Guthrie Center, IA 50115. You can call the center at (641) 747-8383 or email them at consed@netins.net

Jason, thanks for posting that. I've got the same issue with my wife but was unaware of this program.

A quick google of "Becoming an Outdoors Woman Kentucky"  shows me that Kentucky also participates in the program with a workshop coming up in September.

I'll be trying to get my wife to attend!

Again, thanks for sharing that.

Good luck Erby hopefully it will work out for you.  What kind of outdoor reccreation are you involved in?
