Snow Shoeing in The Spires at Schweitzer Mountain

We had a great little family snow shoe outing today, and it was just a stunningly beautiful afternoon! My wife Mandy, myself, our son Trace, and our dog Bentley took the trails that start at The Spires.

Snow Shoeing at Schweitzer

This is located at the top of Mogul Hill Road, where it turns into Tall Timber Road and ends at the Hemlock Hamlet. Their is a gravel road that already winds quite a bit further to access future homesites, but it isn't yet plowed. So you can park your car and snow shoe or cross country ski from the snow-covered gravel road. There are numerous snow shoe trails that intersect this road, where you can hike up the back of Schweitzer's South Bowl or across to The Ridge, another planned community at Schweitzer Mountain.

This trail system is located at around 5400 feet, making it the highest elevation of any roads at Schweitzer. The views looking to Lake Pend Oreille to the east are as good as they get. The trails wind through a hemlock forest with mossy trees draped in snow. This area further above is considered the Reservoir Run by locals, and offers untracked powder sometimes weeks after a storm.

Snow Shoe at The Spires of Schweitzer

We ended up turning off of The Spires road network and hiking along the jeep trail that takes you to the top of the South Bowl of Schweitzer. Of course with a 6 month old in a Baby Bjorn, we have to watch the signs and turn around when he tells us to. So we didn't quite make it to the top, however it sure was a fantastic Friday afternoon outing. Once again reminding me how good my family and I have it.
