Marking future ski trails to The Spires community, off Schweitzer Mountains South Bowl

I recently spent an afternoon with Clay Hutchison, owner of The Spires PUD at Schweitzer Mountain in Sandpoint, Idaho. We skied a handful of runs off Schweitzer's West Bowl, which is accessed from the triple chair of the South Bowl.

This was really a cool experience, as we were marking the ski trail that will provide direct ski-in and ski-out access for residents of The Spires community. Of course there is already incredible skiing accessed from the out of bounds off the end of Schweitzer's South Bowl. This is typically very untracked powder that lasts for a week after a snow storm.

However the true definition of ski-in/ski-out property is that it be accessible by an intermediate skier. Clay has already cleared most of the ski trail to his community, and plans to start grooming this by next season. With several recent lots being sold in The Spires, this premier residential community at Schweitzer is now hitting that critical mass where it will make sense to groom these trails.

The Spires LLC actually owns a chunk of the existing Schweitzer Ski Resort, basically the top of the South Bowl chutes as you near the 'Boundary Chute'. The groomed trail will either start from this point, or more likely will start from the top of the triple chair closer to KMac chute. Of course those of us who love to ski powder will always bypass the groomer for the chance to ski 1000 or so feet of fresh powder down to the Spires.

Most of the infrastructure is already in place for The Spires. This is truly the best planned development at Schweitzer, and all the advance planning will ensure that this community will be the premier residence for years to come. It is the highest point on the mountain, with tremendous lake views and ski access, well planned snow storage, etc. This planning and approval process (which takes years) is what will really enhance and protect the value of this neighborhood at Schweitzer.
