Andre Williams serves up the Bacon Fat

Last night, the city of Evanston offered up a free starlight concert, featuring the Goldstars and headliner Andre Williams.

Andre is an old (and I do mean old, he's 73 years young) Rhythm & Blues guy. The concert was outdoors, at James Park. We sat on the hillside of Mt. Trashmore, and watched the veteran singer, put his portfolio through the grinder. His smoke-addled voice, grinding out some of his best known songs, he opened with Agile, Mobile and Hostile, in which he explained to this mixed audience of young and old, as two 9-year-old girls danced in front of his stage, this grandfather, dressed in all white, including his homburg had, accented only by his Mylar Gold jacket, he explained "If you want to make love to me you have to be Agile, Mobile and Hostile. He followed that with Bacon Fat, Sweet Little Pussycat, and ended after an hour with his biggest hit as an encore Jailbait.

Over the hour, he managed through removing his jacket, removing his tie, turning the jacket inside out, and putting it back on... effect 5 "costume changes"... not bad for a 73 year old, eh?

Andrew was great fun, as he told the crowd that he wasn't used to "playing a gig during daylight hours, and in front of all these white folks".

Oh, and not to be overlooked, the Goldstars, who opened for Andre, and played as his band last night... they held up their end nicely, with a talented bass man, energetic and exciting... and a nice alto-sax bassline, and excellent lead guitarist... (the keyboardist was hard to hear, the sound system didn't mix him in well).

It was a lovely night, in the 70's (temperature)... no bugs, and great music.

Thanks for the free concert, City of Evanston.
