Starting with the Basics for Your First Glenview Home

Starting with the BasicsIf you have been renting an apartment, condo or even living with your parents and have just become a first-time Glenview homeowner – congratulations! While there is a great sense of pride in becoming a homeowner, there can also be an overwhelming sense of nervousness in all the things that will now be your sole responsibility. Here’s a list of some things that are must-haves to invest in when moving into your first home:

New Locks of Your Own
Be sure to change the locks on your new home. Your Glenview neighborhood is safe, no doubt, but it’s just a good safety habit to make sure your new home is safe with new locks. You won’t have to worry about any extra sets of keys that may be floating around between previous owner’s family and neighbors.

Make Sure to Invest in Tools
Living in an apartment, condo, or even with your parents, you have had the luxury of just calling someone if something breaks, and the problem gets fixed. Now that you are a homeowner, it’s your responsibility to make all those small homeowner fixes. Getting a basic set of tools can come in very handy in your new home. A good set includes a hammer, nails, drill, drill bits, staple gun, tape measure, saw, screwdrivers (flathead and Phillips), wrench, pliers, WD-40, and safety glasses.

Be Prepared for Snow
Buying a snow blower for your first home will be a great investment. Snow in the driveway, the walkways and sidewalks doesn’t clear itself, although that may not have been an issue in your apartment. It’s also a good idea to have at least two snow shovels as well to use before leaving in the morning to try to alleviate any ice that may accumulate by the time you get home from work at night.

Enjoy Your New Yard
Now that you have a home, your yard will become an important part of your weekend routine. Be sure to invest in a lawn mower, shovel, rake, weed eater, a heavy-duty broom, wheelbarrow, garden hose, edger, garden hose, and a nice pair of clippers. This is a basic list to get you started on basic yard work to keep your yard looking neat and trimmed. If you decide to do all your own yard work, you will inevitably invest down the road in other tools.

First Aid Kit
Accidents happen, especially around a new home with someone who may not be a big handyman. While just learning all the needed basic homeowner repairs, it’s nice to have a first aid kit handy. Be sure to include band-aids, scissors, tape, gauze, and a first aid instruction booklet, ice pack, Tylenol and a thermometer.
