Since I work at home, I'm lucky enough to be able to take Zoey on walks at least twice a day. Last night, I failed to grab a bag before we headed out the door. The walk was a last minute decision and she had already "done her business" so I figured (wrongly) that she wouldn't need to go again. Well, you know what happened next. About a block from home.
Now, as a responsible pet owner, I am usually armed with bags and ALWAYS pick up after Zoey. So imagine my complete mortification when I realize I don't have any bags with me! I was forced to leave it there, hoping that nobody saw me fail to pick it up. Of course, as soon as we got home I hopped in the car and went back to pick it up, so if anyone did see me leave it - I hope they saw me return to pick it up as well!
Which begs the question (no pun intended): Are you a responsible pet owner?
Someone in my neighborhood sure isn't. Twice in the past few weeks I've found a big pile of you-know-what in MY front yard. Now, Zoey is hand-walked out into the back yard every time to do her business and we immediately pick it up. We don't have a fence and therefore never let her out without a leash. So it isn't hers. Plus, she is a little dog and these are, how else do I say this? BIG poops. (sorry)
To my unknown and irresponsible neighbor-who-owns-a-big-dog: Why did you let your dog go on MY lawn and fail to pick it up? Are you really that lazy? Because the "I ran out of bags" excuse is NOT an excuse, especially when you allowed your dog to do it on TWO separate occasions! YUK!
To all Lake Zurich dog owners: May I remind you that picking up after your pooch is not just good etiquette or common courtesy. It's important for the environment and the health of our children and pets. It is unlawful, smelly and polluting our community.
So be a good neighbor dog owner. Pick it up, please.

I completely feel your pain!! I'll take Oscar out, and sometimes I don't take a bag if I saw that he JUST went outside... and low and behold, he's gotta go again. I'll stand there and look around and shrug my shoulders, and very loudly say, "I'm sorry, but he had just gone" so anyone near by can hear me. I usually go back and pick it up, but I'll be honest, when I was pregnant, there were a handful of times I couldn't pick it up as I couldn't bend over like that and also hold his leash.
What I hate more is when I already have his "stuff" bagged up, and then he decides to go again... umm, dude, you already used up the bag, how could you possibly have more?! LOL
The most disgusting thing I can think of is stepping in poop. I think I'll leave a little flag if I run out and have to go home to get one. :)
I almost missed your photo...it's in b and w now.
DONNA: It's like the murphy's law of dog walking!
SALLY: Ewwww. I agree.
Kelly: I'm sorry but, I have to laugh at this post! I was the president of my homeowner's association--something EVERY agent should do ONCE in a lifetime!!--and the most complaints that I received were about irresponsible pet owners. Well, I'm pretty laid back and things like this seemed a bit 'petty' (no pun intended!) to me until one day I was out in my front yard and found TWO piles the SIZE of my own DOG in my front yard! Being a nurse, poop doesn't bother me a bit but, when I stepped in it and it squished up into my flipflops, I was...Well, let's just say I was just a tad bit angry!! From then on, when someone phoned me, I was MORE than sympathetic with their concerns over irresponsible pet owners!!!
DEBE: Oh, yuk. That's what I'm talkin' about...
As the dog population increases the penalty for not cleaning up after them needs to increase.
Kelly: How did you enjoy that visual?!! And, keep in mind, I wear size 11 shoes!!!!!
;-)
Kelly - I've been in your shoes a couple of times - left not holding a bag. And, just like you I felt humiliated enought o go directly back to the site to clean up afte rmy dog. I'm sure you were looking in all directions too to see if anybody WAS watching!
NORMA: Thankfully, most pet owners are responsible about picking up after their dogs. :)
DEBE: It was wonderful, so descriptive! You should be glad you wear size 11 - my size 7 would have disappeared. Ewwwwwww.
CAROL: I was! Since I farm my neighborhood nearly everybody recognizes me and I'd hate anyone to think that I didn't clean up after Zoey. From now on, I'm making double sure that I always have a bag with me!
You got me on that one Kelly!!! I'm trying to get rid of that memory, that's for sure!!! Have a great evening (what's left of it!)
DEBE: ;-)
As the famous pooper scooper realtor, you should have called and I would have come to your rescue
Hi Kelly, I am sure that is a sinking feeling when a deposit is left on a neighbors lawn. You pose an interesting question though. Many think it is outdoors...what's the big deal. Our small furry family member named Max pasted a couple of years ago now. After nearly 15 years of taking him on his walks...we did as you do....we would have never thought of leaving our issues to someone else. Nice post and kudos to you Kelly.
JUDY: ;-)
GARY: I grew up in the country and it truly wasn't an issue, with several acres, you could let your dog roam and go wherever. But with smaller subdivision lots and sidewalks, leaving a mess for your neighbor is, well, un-neighborly! I'm so sorry about your dog, Max. :(
Kelly - it still amazes me that people walk their dogs and fail to pick up after them. And in my neighborhood (the yards are small if at all), however there are extra bags put out by the association to help those in need out. I too have had a similar situation with my own dog - he did his duty two times (I was prepared), and then the third time - and no bag. I had to run home too and get a hose!!!!!
SHARON: It's great that your association puts out extra bags...what a good idea!
