Naperville passed a mirror-image SB 500 ordinance for Naperville. (SB 500 is the smoke-free ordinance that the Illinois Senate passed by a vote of 6 to 2. They are now awaiting a vote in the House.) The yes's were: Ellingson, Senger, Furstenau, Wehrli, Krause and Miller. The no's were Rosanova. Pradel was absent.
This ordinance, in most ways, is more restrictive than the original ordinance Naperville was discussing. The exception being that smoking is still allowed on patios. The ordinance will go into effect on January 1, 2008.
Just a note, though...If the Illinois House does NOT pass SB 500, which is also supposed to go into affect 1/1/08, Naperville may rescind the ordinance. So if you'd like to see a Smoke-Free Naperville, or not, you can send an email to the City Council (council@naperville.il.us), the Naperville Sun (TheSun@scn1.com) and/or The Daily Herald (fencepost@dailyherald.com) telling them what a great job the Naperville City Council did. Don't forget to include your town, day and evening phone numbers.
