*77 Works in Illinois from any cell phone

A friend shared with me today some very valuable information that I would like to pass on to those of you, who are like myself and oblivious to a service available on every cellular phone in Illinois (and some other states). It is the *77 feature. Dialing *77 was verified, was immediately connected to the Illinois State Police Emergency Dispatch after one ring. You can and should use this number in addition to 911 anytime you fear for your safety. The dispatcher was queried whether this *77 feature really worked as advertised and she confirmed that when you dial *77 from your cellular phone you will be immediately connected with the state emergency dispatcher closest to your mobile location. The example cited to me was if you should be followed by an strange car or attempted to be pulled over by an unmarked car displaying a flashing red light, (these can be purchased from any auto parts store), to call *77 from your mobile and ask if there was a police vehicle attempting to make a stop at your location. I am fortunate & blessed to live in a community where feeling safe is a way of life, but it's always good information to have.
