The Village of Wilmette originally built the Wilmette Theatre in 1913 for $52,000. The owners knew early on that the young audience is the most important customer, and in 1914, Friday night became “Children’s Night at the Wilmette”.

The Willmette Theatre has a rich history with many owners including being acquired by Encyclopedia Britannica Films (EBF) in 1950. EBF is the largest maker of educational films in the world – many filmed right here in Wilmette.

Finally in May 2006, after being threatened to be turned into a furniture store, former Broadway actor and talent agent, Sam Samuelson of Evanston and actress/acting teacher, Carole Dibo of Wilmette buy the historic Wilmette Theatre, thus preserving a part of Wilmette’s rich history. On June 24, 2006, the Wilmette Theatre reopened its doors with the interior repainted, the original crown molding restored, new sound fold curtains and all the old nostalgia that this theatre has seen throughout the years.
