Trueman - Winnetka's Newest Prepared Food Store

Trueman in Winnetka is a place where you can get some really smart food. It's good looking, healthy, delicious and well-priced - and that's "smart" food in my book.

John Trueman, owner of Trueman, refers to his store as "grab and go" food because it's prepared, packaged, refrigerated, and ready for you to walk in and get it - either for lunch or dinner.

John left the world of commercial real estate and in 2007 began catering - his love and zest for food and parties made him realize this was his real pursuit. He began by catering benefits and corporate and social events. John opened Trueman this year (2011) as an extension of his catering business.

John changes the entrees every week but offers some popular staples everyday including salmon, pretzel crusted chicken, and chicken and cheese enchiladas. There are fresh salads, homemade soups and a la carte items as well.

He has not forgotten the treats . . . he works with local bakers including an Evanston man who makes his mini-cupcakes and Susan Marren who produces the tastiest thin chocolate chip cookies.

If you going to be entertaining, John has not forgotten the flowers and other niceties of a well-designed table. John works with Nancy Chase and Sarah McCool to help design floral arrangements for a variety of different functions.

Pulled barbecue chicken
Buffalo chicken dip
Veggie burgers
Quinoa and Salads
And some really fabulous looking mini-sandwiches: peanut butter and bacon, hummus and grilled vegetables, grilled chicken with pesto and mozzarella, roast turkey with cranberry and mayonnaise, ham and Brie with honey mustard.

Trueman is a welcome addition to Winnetka - particularly since Song of Sixpence closed last year and left a big gap for this type of store. Stop in or call and give Trueman a try - they also deliver and foods can be ordered ahead.
