If you are thinking of moving to the Chicago area, the North Shore suburbs is one area you should definitely explore. The North Shore stretches north from Chicago and includes the suburbs of Wilmette, Kenilworth,Winnetka, Northfield, and Glencoe (heading north from the city.)
These communities make up one large contiguous area and while each suburb has its own unique feel, they are very comparable. Wilmette is the largest community and has the most diverse housing stock with homes ranging in price from around $300,000 to lake front mansions up to $4 million. Kenilworth is the smallest village and is well-known for its one school that houses kindergarten through eighth grade.
Winnetka has the most downtown shopping areas and restaurants while Glencoe has a very diverse housing stock, from contemporary splits to traditional new construction.
All these villages lie along the Milwaukee North Line which is the commuter train for the north suburbs - Wilmette, Kenilworth and Glencoe each have one station, while Winnetka has three station stops. The commutes are approximately 25-35 minutes depending on which station and time of day. The trains are clean, fast, efficient, and generally on time.
One of the main draws of the North Shore are the schools - all of which feed into New Trier
High School, one of the highest rated high schools in the state. New Trier High School has a student enrollment of approximately 4100 students divided between two campuses (freshmen at the Northfield campus.)
The Chicago Sun Times ranked New Trier at #3 in 2009, and the Chicago Tribune ranked New Trier in the top 5% statewide. With these kind of rankings, it stands to reason that all feeder schools are also held to the highest educational standards.
The North Shore suburbs have much to offer to relocating individuals and families. Beautiful tree lined streets and sidewalks, a diverse housing stock that includes historic homes as well as new construction. Multiple shopping areas, many restaurants, leafy parks, and plenty of beautiful beaches to keep you busy all summer.
And one unique advantage to this area is proximity to downtown Chicago with three different ways to get there: the commuter train, the expressway, and Lake Shore Drive.
