5 Great Reasons to Retire in Fishers, Indiana! Yes, INDIANA!

Let's be honest. Fishers, Indiana is not the typical stuff of dreams when it comes to dreaming of retirement. It's an Indianapolis suburb, after all - not a tropical beach locale! But really, WHY NOT consider retiring in Fishers? It's centrally located, meaning you can easily visit family and friends in a variety of locations, there's lots to do and, best of all, you can afford it! Need more? Here are 5 Great Reasons to Retire in Fishers, Indiana!

#1 - Because Forbes.com says you should! Fishers made the recently-released Forbes.com 2011 list of Top 25 Suburbs for Retirement. Not too shabby for an Indianapolis suburb! A very low crime rate (lowest on the list, in fact), affordable homes, and a cost of living that's a full 10 percent below the national average make Fishers an attractive place for retirees to enjoy life. See the full list here!

Ironwood Golf Course, Fishers Indiana#2 - Parks and Recreation. With 12 municipal parks, 65 miles of multipurpose trail, a slew of community events including Movies in the Park, Fishers Farmers Market, and the Summer Concert Series, plus free classes through the Fishers Public Library, retirees can lead an active, interesting life in Fishers. And let's not forget the golf courses! Because what would retirement be without golf? There are 8 golf courses in Fishers alone, and at least that many nearby.

#3 - Easy Access to Indy. Want to cheer on the Colts, visit the Indianapolis Zoo or take in the newest exhibit at the Indianapolis Museum of Art? Not a problem! Getting from Fishers to downtown Indianapolis is easy! Forbes.com actually dinged Fishers for its lack of mass transit to Indianapolis, and that's certainly something that needs improvement. But even if you have to do the driving, Fishers to Indy is a fairly easy trip that usually doesn't involve the harrowing driving you're likely to encounter in other cities of this size.

Fishers homes#4 - Family Affairs. Not all retirees want to live in kid-free, adults-only environments. After all, children remind us how to be young! So a family-friendly community like Fishers during your Golden Years is a great choice if you enjoy a little age diversity. However, if you'd really rather live in a community of contemporaries, Fishers has several adults-only communities with fabulous amenities. Britton Falls is one!

#5 - Fast Track to Florida. Eight months out of the year Fishers enjoys (mostly) tolerable weather. Those other four months, not so much! But as a retiree with no schedules to tie you down, you can simply make a beeline south to Florida during the dreary winter months. And you won't be the only one. Most Hoosiers are well-acquainted with the geography of the Sunshine State!
