Thriller in Valparaiso - Double Overtime Win for Crusaders in Front of National TV Audience!

Crusader's Basketball - pre Game Warm Up

WOW..that is the only way to describe the Valparaiso Crusader's win over the Redhawks of Miami Of Ohio! ESPN's Bracket-Buster Gametonight took place in front of a rowdy crowd. Once again Valpo made National T.V. as ESPN Classic was there to televise the game from the ARC.

It was a sluggish start for Valpo, as Miami was running one of the most impressive motion offenses I have ever witnessed. They could cut, post, pass and shoot, and they did that quite well as they took a 38-30 halftime lead over the Crusaders. BUT...the 2nd half was different..Shawn Huff a senior showed his desire and leadership as he scored 26 of his Career-High 32 points (all in the 2nd half), just when Valpo needed a leader! Urule Igbavoda played a strong game as well. He finished with 22 points, but even more impressive, he had 13 rebounds. Freshman standout Michael Rogers, finished the game with 10 points and sparked Valpo with his tenacious defense! The second half was back and forthand ended when Igbavoda's last second shot stayed on the rim for what seemed an eternity, before rolling off and sending the game into the first over time. Regulation ended 75-75 so on to Overtime #1....Back and forth, and back and forth again. Valpo had the lead with less then 8 seconds left when Miami's Kenny Hayes hit what had to be at least a 28 foot three pointer that hit nothing but net to send it into a 2nd overtime session! This time Valpo pressed harder and harder and out scored the Redskins 12-7 in the second OT to walk away with a 99-94 thriller at the Arc in Valparaiso Indiana! The Redskins play of Kenny Hayes, Michael Bramos and Tim Pollitz was impressive as they accounted for 75 of the Redskins 94 points. It was an absolute incredible game and one that anyone watching will always remember!

Bracket Buster Game Action !

Lots of TV Time Outs - Thanks ESPN :)

SO...what is next for the Crusaders? There are 3 games left for them. IF Valpo is wanting to host a Horizon League Tournament Game, they will need to win ALL three of the remaining games. They travel Monday to play at Milwaukeethen back to the ARC in Valpo to play at Home this upcoming Thursday 2/28/08 tip off 7pm CST against Detroit. The season finale will be on March 1st against Wright State- this game will be televised nationally again by ESPN 2 with a start time of 11:00am CST - this game just could determine if Valpo will be hosting a Tourney Home Game!!!

The win tonight by Valpo was a much needed. Hopefully, this will be a win to propel Valpo to winning their next 3 games!

Good photos. Isn't it wonderful to enjoy the thrill of a big win?

Jeff, it must have been a thrill to get a picture taken with Sedric Toney. Well, at least for Sedric to be able to get a photo with a star like you.

Love these blogs....caught the last 5 minutes versus Loyola the other night on 56 (whatever that station is). Felt bad for you as they slipped...lotta bad shots, again. Every time I watch (which admittedly is rare) they have a different guy wanting to take over down the stretch and he just takes horrible attempts. Glad they got this one!

Vickie:

It was a thrill except for the part when Grace said we are up 8pts with 1:36 left in regulation and I looked at my georgous wife and said "dont worry Valpo could loose the lead" funny...they did BUT they hung on for a wild finish and win...Welcome to March Mardness!

Grace, I love your photos and your enthusiasm!  I'll keep my fingers crossed for the team ... and you :)

Danny:

It was a thrill to get the picture with Sedric..what a class gentleman to meet. I WAS the one feeling honored to meet such a star..I did not know he played for the Knicks and even more exciting he wanted my business card and asked me to email him as he wanted to talk further about something with me (may be about the Indiana situation) but I plan on emailing him later tonight. BIG week for Valpo..but lets be real..the only way they get to the Big Dance is win the Conf. Tourney..and to do that they will have to go through Wright State and Butler..it is March Madness where anything can and usually does happen.

Jeff

Jim:

Yes that is Channel 56 Lakeshore Station..you are correct unlike most big teams..like NC they go to Hansbourough...IU looks for Gordon..Butler looks for Graves..Valpo does NOT have a go-to guy at the end of a game but maybe this is the time where Senior Huff steps and says "give me the ball". Valpos three point threat Hannapa is OUT for the year with mono...IF..IF they can win the next three games and host a game...watch out...anything and everything usually does happen in March and maybe their is some Cinderallaness calling on Valpo...Big Game on Monday...1 game at a time for this team but the win Saturday Afternoon was HUGE!!!

I love it when a local team wins espcially when trhey can do it over-time.  I hate it when they blow a lead and have to come back.  Reminds me of when you do a marketing piece and do not follow up on it and feel that you have to battle back the ground you lost

Thanks Carole - appreciate you taking time to stop by and comment. Sincerely, Grace

Thaks Dave it was a thriller of a game!

Sincerely,

Grace

I'm late to the commenting, but a great game!  Now can they build on that momentum thru the tourney?

Grace, I did get your notes too on the legislation issue thanks.
