Since I specialize in referrals to and from Latin America, I am often asked exactly what countries I mean. In the United States and Canada, the term is generally used to refer to all of the countries south of the United States including the Caribbean.(This is definition that I have been using).
Another definition would be all of the lands which were settled by countries using the Romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese & French). This definition is not often used because it would include much of the United States and Canada.
Another definition would refer to countries currently using one of the Romance languages. It gets even more confusing because there are 12 countries south of the United States that are English-speaking, four countries that are French-speaking and another three that are Dutch-speaking.
