I have family in the Delphos, Kansas area and they made me aware of the current efforts to save this great piece of history. I have provided some hotlinks that provide more details.
The little Kansas town of Delphos is working to preserve a great piece of history. In 1860 eleven year old Grace Bedell wrote Abraham Lincoln a letter and told him she thought he would have a better chance of becoming President if he grew a beard. He did and well we all know the rest . That little girl grew up, married and moved to Delphos, Kansas. The house where her husband and she lived now sits vacant. An effort is under way to raise the funds ($20,000) to purchase the home, restore it, and open it to the public for viewing. Delphos is working with The Grace Bedell Foundation to make this happen. The home has some wonderful history - Batt Masterson, and Wild Bill Hickok also stayed there. (Do you suppose there might be bullet holes in the walls? ) A television station from Wichita recently did a story on it. Check out their story here "letter to Lincoln"

have they raised enough funds yet. This is the only place that I have heard about this endeavor. Have you heard who is doing the restoration volunteers or hired contractors?
I guess I got my history lesson for the day. I never new this tidbit of history. Best wishes to Delphos, Kansas and their preservation efforts.
The Grace Bedell Educational Foundation can be found at www.gracebedellfoundation.org. We are asking all Kansas grade school and middle school teachers to do a session on Grace Bedell. We would like each child to donate one dollar (in Lincoln pennies is great) to help save the house. We have just begun our endeavor, and desperately need donations. We know the house needs a lot of work, but are focusing on simply obtaining it at this point. What a great subject for President's Day or Kansas Day for area teachers. Thank You, Byron for helping to get the word out about this important endeavor.
looks like a junkyard like the rest of the town
