Mahaffie Farmstead Boot Sculpture - Olathe Kansas Celebrates 150 Years

The Mahaffie Farmstead Boot Sculpture helps Olathe Kansas in Celebrating it's 150^th Birthday.

This boot sculpture is provided by the City of Olathe and is one of the twelve sculptures in celebration of Olathe Kansas 150^th Birthday Celebration! For more information on the twelve sculptures check out this link.

This sculpture incorporates the landmark Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Historic Site. The Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm Historic Site is Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the last remaining stagecoach stop on the historic Santa Fe Trail still open to the public here in Olathe Kansas.

James Beatty Mahaffie and his wife, Lucinda, moved in 1857 to Olathe, Kansas. In 1858, James Mahaffie purchased 160 acres along the Westport Cut-Off section of the Santa Fe and Oregon Trails. In 1863, the Barlow and Sanderson Stage Line contracted with Mahaffie to provide livery service and meals for the westbound stagecoach trade.

In 1865, Mahaffie completed the limestone family home, complete with a cellar, which served as the stagecoach passenger dining hall, may have served more than 70 passengers daily.

The Stagecoach Stop ceased operation in 1870 because of the railroad business which came to Olathe Kansas in November of 1869. The site passed through six hands between then and 1979, when the City of Olathe purchased the remaining 20 acres of the original farmstead. A non-profit foundation was formed in 1998 to oversee the site. Two adjoining acreages also have been purchased by the City of Olathe. One parcel, 45 acres just south of the Mahaffie Farm, will remain open as a view-shed. Nine acres to the east have been earmarked for a visitors center and museum facility.
