Kansas is about 80,000 square miles and nearly 97% of that land is privately owned. That makes finding places to hunt in Kansas somewhat difficult at times unless you own your own private hunting lands. However, there is a Kansas program that helps Kansas landowners offer their land for public hunting and recreation.
The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) has a program called the Walk-In Hunting Access (WIHA) program that has about 2,220 agreements to provide almost one million acres of hunting land access statewide. The access time is usually September to November or January. Hunters can access the map atlas showing land available for hunting opportunities online. Hunting licenses must be obtained and foot traffic only is allowed for access onto the privately owned land.
