Do you snicker when Inspectors mention anti-tip brackets?

Yeah, I've seen it a lot.  I mention the missing anti-tip bracket on the kitchen stove and the Realtors just rolls their eyes and snicker.

Here's why I mention it!

Little kids sitting or pushing on the open oven door can cause the stove to tip over on them.  So can setting a large heavy pan on the oven door.

But, most times when I mention it to the buyer's, realtors just roll their eyes and snicker about "alarmist" inspectors.

It's like a seat belt! (See "Is Your House Wearing Its Seat Belt?")

When you're driving down the road and suddenly say to yourself, "Oh goodness, I think I'm going to have an accident!" (actually, most of us use a shorter two word phrase starting with "OH"), it's way too late to reach for your seat belt.

You hope you never ever need it, but when you do, it's too late to reach for it.  It needs to already be in place.

Same with an anti-tip bracket.  You may never, ever need it.  But, enough of us have needed it, that it should be installed on all stoves.

How do you know if your stove has it?

  1. Take everything off the stove top including the salt & pepper off the back of the stove.
  2. Open the oven door.
  3. Lean against the counter with your hip.
  4. Put your foot on the outer edge of the door and your hand on the back of the stove.
  5. Push down with your foot.

Does the stove start to tip over or is something holding it from tipping?

If it tips, you don't have your bracket installed.
