Public Library System in Lexington - My Evaluation

My wife, Kathy and are very thankful for the Public Library system here and around our nation. We believe a healthy library system is essential in a democratic country.

I haved now lived in Lexington for three years. We raised our children in arguably the nations best library system King County Public Libraries.

We have been impressed with the selection of books and other media available for circulation in the Lexington Public Library system. The biggest difference between King County and Lexington is the disparity between the number of volumes purchased of the more popular books. The wait for a best seller in King County was quite short compared to here in Lexington.

Another difference I have noticed between Lexington and King County is the space available for parking in Lexington. There are numerous times when we go to the Tates Creek branch of the Lexington Public libraries that it is difficult to find a parking spot. Tates Creek is a large building so it never seems like the library is crowded. However not being able to find a place to park when we have a couple of grandchildren along is pretty disappointing.

Many of the patrons have to drive to get to the library so that accounts for the need for additional parking. The Lexington Fayette County Government provides bus transportation but it does not seem like many people in Lexington consider it a practical means of transportation. I wonder if the library system should consider a free shuttle to and from certain destinations in the libraries that are not located near downtown? Would the citizens of this city be willing to pay extra taxes for the service? Would you?
