The picture below was taken during one of my recent Winchester, Kentucky home inspections.

The attic hatch, just a piece of sheetrock, is in the upstairs hallway. Remember that heat rises right up to that second floor ceiling. Insulation helps hold it in the living space of the house. No insulation on the attic hatch lets quite a bit of heat out of the house and raises your energy bill.
The simple solution: A piece of insulation, relatively cheaply purchased at your local big box home improvement store, glued to the top side of the sheetrock hatch, reduces heat loss and your energy bill.
