I've been meaning to get to the new Alligator Pear restaurant in Harvey LA for the longest time, and last week I finally made it.
If I was putting it off for any reason, I don't know why - I loved it!
Just a little more upscale than neighboring Parrot Pete's (they have the same owner), Alligator Pear offers a fresh take on some local favorites with their daily lunch specials along with a delicious selection of salads, pizza, sandwiches, burgers and more.
The menu offers a few nods to well known local politicos too, with the "Harry Lee Chicken Salad" and "Sheriff Newell's Juicy Ribeye".
The set up is different than most of our New Orleans eateries - a mix of self serve and table service. When you enter, grab a menu and then place your order at the counter where you are given a numbered card that gets swiped at the table of your choice. Drinks are self serve, with free refills. When your food is ready, one of the very friendly wait staff bring it to your table. Be sure to note that a 10% tip is already included in your bill.
My selection was the Royal Palm Salad. While I was a little leery about paying $13.95 for a salad, it was worth every penny. A spring mix with red peppers, red onions and a Champagne vinaigrette was topped with a little tower of Alligator Pear dip (homemade guacamole), crab meat, tomatoes, shrimp remoulade and chopped egg and served alongside crostinis. Delicious!
With the weather starting to cool off, I'll be returning soon to dine al fresco at one of the many outdoor tables that overlook the fountains and let you do a little people watching as well. While that salad may be hard to beat, the soup of the day would be a perfect compliment for a beautiful fall day.
The Alligator Pear restaurant is located at 1901 Manhattan Blvd. in Harvey and opens at 11 am daily. For more information, you can call them at (504) 281-4472.

Sounds YUMMY! I love places like that...especially when you can eat outside and people watch!
P.S. Speaking of alligators...how about that Gator vs. LSU game this weekend?? I have a good friend who went to school at LSU...he wears everything purple and yellow. He was in the SWAMP for the beating this weekend...ouch! Go Gators!
I love the name of this restaurant "The Alligator Pear!" So cool and original! And it sounds like they did a great job of naming their menu items! The Royal Palm Salad sounds delicious and is something I would have ordered myself!
LaShawn, no gators allowed here! LOL :) Fortunately, I was camping this weekend and missed seeing the beating personally.
Terrie, "Alligator Pear" is an old local New Orleans word for avocados. The restaurant makes their own guacamole and it is excellent!
I love "alligator pears" and I'm sure that I would love this restaurant. Great review!
Kelly, it's a wonderful place and with the weather starting to ever so slightly cool off, it's about time to sit outside, enjoy a meal and maybe a glass of wine and people watch in the evening....that's relaxation!
Hmmm, hmmm, good! Great restaurant review that makes me want to try out both of these restaurants - but it's a little far for me.
I am going to forward this post to my hubby so we will both remember to have this restaurant on the "list" for the next time we are in your neck of the woods :-)
That salad sounded awesome and I really like the outdoor seating area.
Margaret, a trip down south during the winter isn't a bad thing :)
Kris, if you go, call me first - I'm ready to go back anytime!
Okay...who's up for lunch RIGHT NOW? I'll take my salad to go...please. You know the post is good when the reader can smell the food cooking. :-) GBU!
Ah! Lisa...this is funny...I had to help my son come up with a "Cajun" recipe for his epicurian club at school and came upon the website for the Alligator Pear...(small world)...the recipe was for cajun rice w/ andoulie sausage...and let me tell you it turned out FABULOUS! This week is Greek so back to the world wide web for more delicious recipes! The Alligator Pear sounds like just the thing...I will definitely look it up when I'm in your neck of the woods. Have a fantastic week Lisa.
My mouth is watering.
This sounds like a lovely place to dine and that the food is really good also. Thanks for sharing.
Elizabeth, I didn't get lunch today - care to join me tomorrow? :)
Rebecca, that is so funny! Did he learn how to pronounce andouille?
Lenn, mine too :)
Bob/Carolin, you're welcome!
Sounds like a good place to eat. Louisiana I think really has a lot of good restaurants though. I' ve never herd of a bad one.
Lisa - I never knew that the term "Alligator Pear" was another word for avocado until I read your post. The food sounds scrumptious. When I saw the name of the restaurant all I could think of was my first taste of alligator when I visited New Orleans a couple of years ago....I never thought I would eat it but it was delicious!
Charles, let's just say that we take our food seriously here :)
Donna, fun, yummy and educational too - LOL! So, did you think that alligator tastes like chicken??
Lisa - I've had alligator meat before and it taste really yummy in my tummy, but never heard the term Alligator Pear unitl now with so many Alligators in our lakes.
Petra, if you think about it, next time you see an avocado, look at the skin - it really does resemble the skin of an alligator.
Lisa - I couldn't believe how much it tasted like chicken which was a pleasant surprise considering I had no idea what to expect. :-)
Lisa~You have not lost your perfection my friend. You just keep your locals well informed, travelers excited and for those of us miles away, reading with our taste buds yearning for some good LA food.
Donna, LOL!
Julie, awww, you always know just the right thing to say. Did I mention that I missed you while you were gone and I'm thrilled to see you back posting again? :)
Lisa -- this looks like a great place to eat! Wish I lived a little closer. On the other hand, maybe I should plan a vacation to the New Orleans area. That Royal Palm salad sounds delish!
Joan, come on down and we'll share one dine outside together :)
Lisa, this is an awesome write up! I love this place and I have never been there! I love the logo!!! Some day I tell ya!!
Jo, I fully expect that the next time your hubby is down this way you will be along for the ride!
Lisa ~ Alligator Pear means "Avocado" that is even cooler....and O love homemade guac!
Lisa, What a delicious post you have blogged up! Your salad seemed perfect.
Have the owners seen this post?
Margaret, thank you! I keep thinking about that salad and will have to go back for another soon. If the owner has seen this, i don't know about it. Maybe I should bring a copy when I return?
Lisa, That would be a good idea. Take a look, I just finished sending you an email.
