What is the Calcasieu Historical Preservation Society's "CALCA Commendation?"

Calcasieu Historical Preservation SocietyAnnually, The Calcasieu Historical Preservation Society Society (CHPS) sponsors two major awards.

In this post, I want to highlight the CALCA-Commendation. The purpose of this award, according the the CHPS website is:

"To encourage and recognize outstanding achievements in exterior preservation, exterior restoration, exterior rehabilitation and new construction within historic areas of Calcasieu."

The CALCA-Commendation award is a certificate of recognition given for buildings which have been:

  • preserved
  • restored
  • rehabilitated, or
  • are outstanding examples or new construction that are recognized for contributing to and enhancing historic areas of Calcasieu Parish.

The award is presented to the current owner in recognition of the work they have accomplished.

Anyone may submit applications for themselves or on behalf of an owner (business or residence).

Award nominations are accepted by the CHPS Landmarks Committee. The nominating process generally begins on September 1 and ends on September 30th.

All nominations are reviewed by the committee with recommendations for selection then made to CHPS Board of Directors.

The Board of Directors makes the final selection of award recipients.
Formal notification of results is generally made by December 1st.

The award is presented at the annual meeting in January.

The CHPS website offers numerous pages with photos of recent properties that have received the CALCA Commendation.

A complete list of recipients over the years is also provided within the awards section of CalcasieuPreservation.org.

All Lake Area citizens are encouraged to support CHPS by becoming a member. The dues are extremely low. The benefits, extreme! Learn more on the home page of CalcasieuPreservation.org.
