Pinehills - In, or Around for 365 Days - Freedom from Slavery - Parting Ways

Parting Ways Cemetery by Judy Jennings

In honor of Martin Luther King Day, I thought it might be interesting to share a little African American history as it relates to Plymouth.

Did you know that Massachusetts Bay Colony was the first British colony to legalize slavery in 1641? It wasn't until 1783 that slavery became illegal. Many slaves fought in the American Revolutionary War (for both sides) with hopes of earning their freedom. Not all were so lucky.

However four notable Plymouth African Americans were given their freedom and a gift of land from the government in exchange for their service. Quamony Quash, Cato Howe, Plato Turner and Prince Goodwin established an area in Plymouth known as Parting Ways - New Guinea Settlement.

Here is the stone that marks their burial site.

"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal." - Martin Luther King, Jr.
