Selling Your Massachusetts Home? Put Away Those Precious "Collections"

stamp collectionThe late comedian, George Carlin had a famous routine about stuff. One of his lines was, "A house is just a pile stuff with a cover on it."

Some people take this a bit too literally, particularly those with a fondness for collecting. I have seen some collections in homes that are really in danger of taking over the place.

What are some of the things that people collect?

  • Stamps
  • Coins
  • Records
  • Musical Instruments
  • Dolls
  • Comic Books
  • Shot Glasses
  • Stuffed Animals
  • Movie Posters
  • Salt & Pepper Shakers (my grandmother had hundreds)
  • Sports Memorabilia
  • Sea Shells
  • Magazines
  • Old Radios & Record players
  • Model Cars

You get the idea.

Some of these collections can be the basis for a fun and interesting hobby. And, better yet, they may even have a monetary value. But they all have one thing in common - a feeling of clutter.

When a potential buyer is looking at your home you don't really want them to be distracted with collections, of any kind. And, unless they are neatly and securely locked in a display case, I would also be concerned about someone liking one of these items a little too much.

If you are in the process of preparing your home for sale and have a collection you value, you may want to consider storing it with a friend for awhile.

At least until you have a new home and a more permanent place for all of your "stuff."
