365 things to do in Worcester County - see nature's devastation in Southbridge. Last Wednesday started out like many other days. It was warm and pleasant and I went about my business. I even made my appointment in Sturbridge on time. I greeted the home owners at 4:00 pm and by 5:30 pm all of us knew that this was no ordinary thunder storm. While I was visiting and discussing their home, the skies turned pitch dark as though it was night and it began to rain. We lost power and as the skies lightened, I decided that it was a good time to make "a run" for it and quickly said my goodbyes. Since I live in Holden, I was traveling away from the storm but the skies opened up and deluged my passage. As the lightning bolts zoomed on either side of me, my car hydroplaned all the way home.
In the last several days I called friends, clients and customers from the towns that were hit the hardest, Brimfield, Southbridge, Sturbridge and Charlton. I was content to find out that everyone I knew came out alright. But the stories of their neighbors' plight brought tears to my eyes.
Today I decided to take the "scenic" tour of Southbridge. It was not intentional because part of my journey was detoured. I don't know what was on the other side of the National Guard's road block but what I saw was frightening enough.
It is hard to believe that a natural occurrence can bring this much devastation and I know that in other parts of the world, the effect can be even more extreme. But when this happens in your own state and your own back yard, it brings the situation to a clearer and starker reality. I found out that my company, Keller Williams, Greater Worcester, is being proactive and is working to help the victims of the Tornado. We are collecting clothes and other itmes. Even now, I am packing up items that I will deliver to our office in a few days and wish I could do more. If you too would like to make a donation, please contact Keller Williams office at 508-754-3020 or stop by 9am-5 pm @ 324 Grove St., in Worcester.
