Have you ever wished you could live in a place with real “character.” Welcome to the lively and eclectic peninsular neighborhood of Eastport. Bordered by Spa Creek to the north, Back Creek to its south and the expanse of the Severn River and the Chesapeake to its east. Its only attachment to dry land is to the west… old town, historic Annapolis. Eastport is only 12 blocks long and 5 blocks wide. Such a tiny village, but oh so big when it comes to character.
It’s the Greenwich Village of the Chesapeake Bay. On the books, Eastport is a village, part of Annapolis, Maryland. But don’t bring that up to an Eastporter.
You see, Eastport seceded from Annapolis (and the United States) back in 1998. It was a minor incident that started it all, really. Annapolis city council closed the main drawbridge to Eastport for a number of weeks for repairs without telling the Eastport residents. Things got out of hand and the rebellious Eastporters rose up in a bloodless insurrection. Words were spoken and vegetables were thrown across the river.
Thus, The Maritime Republic of Eastport (MRE) was founded. So if you long for a place with a lot of character, Eastport is your place. It has its own anthem, militia, and flag. And, of course, it has its own navy in keeping with its long and proud heritage.
Eastport was settled a century ago by blue-collar boat builders and watermen. It retains that maritime flavor today. Boating businesses of all kinds are here, from yacht clubs and marinas to sail makers and chandleries.
The residents are proud of Eastport’s bohemian lifestyle… its narrow streets of older homes, cottages and bungalows. Many of the older clapboard houses have been renovated into spectacular homes that can be pricy. But on this little piece of maritime heaven there is nowhere else to expand. So renovation and remodeling is a way of life.
First class dining is within walking distance. And for less formal occasions, little pubs and eateries dot the neighborhood streets. For a change of pace, the country of old Annapolis is just a walk across the drawbridge. (The US dollar is good on both sides of the river.)
Eastport is a close, neighborly community with its own civic association. Residents are an involved group and gather to support local charities and town improvement activities. Festivities include the annual picnic and the world’s longest tug-of-war with neighboring “old” Annapolis across the drawbridge. (The rope is 1700 feet long. No kidding.)
While Eastport may be secluded in its own private little paradise, all the amenities you may require are just a short walk or drive away. First class shopping, dining, entertainment and just about anything you need is here. And, of course, all kinds of water sports are right in your own back yard. Annapolis, right next door, is known as the sailing capital of America and it’s true. Boating, fishing, water skiing, you name it. It’s all here. The Anne Arundel County schools are great. Washington and Baltimore are thirty minutes away.
It seems everyone here is a sailor or boater of some kind. Eastporters are proud to keep their boats in the water 12 months a year. A perfect January day is “frostbite sailing” in the morning followed by a warm-up at the pub in the afternoon.
Welcome to Eastport.
