December’s Season of Celebrations & Sharing ~ A sweet farewell to our Troops from Baltimore.

As we plan and prepare for the holidays, shop and bake, wrap and write Christmas cards, it's easy to forget that there is so much outside our little bubble. I imagine many of us have made donations to charities, bought gifts for "Toys for Tots" or even sponsored a family, which is what we did at Keller Williams Realty Centre of Greater Howard County. many of us make our contribution and then we focus on our own festivities.

USO in BaltimoreSpare a thought for the brave men and women of our armed forces who are not afforded the simple joy of spending the holidays with their family because they are thousands of miles away serving our country.

Baltimore airportThis past weekend Troop 884 of the Girl Scouts of America headed to BWI airport to hand out care packages and girl scout cookies to military personal heading to Afghanistan. A mere week before Christmas they were to be taken away from their families.

Books to be readThe "Daisys" were given a tour of the USO before setting up a table of goodwill in the airport. In one area of the USO there were books that soldiers could record their own voice reading a story to be sent to their family members.

The care packages contained items such as razors, shampoo, snacks and magazines that may not be needed right away, but would be of great comfort in a few months time. The "girl scout cookies" are always a comfort food no matter when they are eaten.

The gnome in the militaryOne soldier had his lucky gnome with him- as he travels with the military he says always takes pictures. He did not miss taking a picture of the Catonsville Brownies for his album.

My Nephew is heading to Afghanistan later this year for his third tour of duty. He has often talked about how these gestures from the community mean so much to him, especially as he is outward bound. On the last deployment we were lucky enough to spend a few hours with him and enjoy a great meal before he headed to Iraq for 10 months because he flew through Baltimore.

The 5,6 and 7 year old girls who participated in this program probably have no idea about where the troops are heading or what it means to be at war ~ why should they? They are just little girls! But hopefully the recipients of their sweet treats left Baltimore with a smile on their face.
