Is
Centennial Park in Ellicott City, Maryland being invaded?
It was a picture
perfect January day in Central Maryland, so we headed to Centennial
Park in Ellicott City
for some 2 wheel practice- mostly stopping, starting and handling
hills, all of which went very well.
As we pulled into the
busy parking lot by Pavilion D, there was obviously an event taking
place that was a little different to the norm. All around us were
people dressed in what we thought was Medieval attire at first, but
after a closer look there was no defined historic period. A wide range
of eras from the 1300's to the 1500's with a few Spartans and Romans
for good measure were being represented. Apparently there were
also fantasy warriors in the midst too. I swear I saw an Elvis
impersonator as well.
Darkon
is a full-contact medieval fantasy wargaming group, active in the
Baltimore/Washington area since 1985. Every other Sunday, between 150
and 300 members gather in costume and armor to fight unchoreographed
mock battles with padded weaponry.
There was quite a
crowd of participants who all seemed to be enjoying the battle at
Centennial Park in Ellicott City today. There are strict game rules and
requirements to keep the fun safe- a 303 page rule book to be precise. This may not be everyones "Cup of Tea", but it looked very
interesting and it was colorful. Many had padded swords, battle axes,
lances and bows and arrows that were being waved around and making
contact with various body parts. The bouts lasted only minutes and
everyone seemed to be having a lot of fun. It was interesting to watch
too.As
well as the high energy adrenalin of the combat, they also have
camp-outs and feasts. All held with the members in 'character', wearing
either their period or fantasy regalia. So it is a social group too!
Although, the president freely admitted to being a 'nerd', he was keen
to point out that they don't all live in their mother's basement. A
large majority are professionals that enjoy the escape.
