Short Sales Short Tales . ." My Grandma's screwed!"

"My Grandma's screwed!"

That was the last words I ever heard from this real estate agent. . never really saw her again, yet those words resound deep inside me over and over again. .

"My grandma's screwed!"

I was teaching a class about short sales to agents for a local brokerage. I find it stimulating and an honor to be asked and share my knowledge about short sales with people that are out there helping other people.

As I finished my class an agent approach me. .

"Excuse me, can we speak for a minute?" she asked me . . .

"Of course" I replied as I stepped to one corner of the room for a little privacy.

"Is about my grandma, she moved to Florida 3 years ago and her house's value has dropped from $220,000 to $80,000!. .and she keeps calling me asking me . .what to do? I don't know what to tell her . .Can you help me?"

"you know. .she thinks I have all the answers for her since. .I'm in real estate. " . .


I noticed a little desperation on her voice as I generalized my answer immediately. .

"Well, perhaps she should consult with an attorney and could try to do a loan modification. . . depending on her finances and since she is so much underwater, a short sale could possible be the best option for her. . but only if she has a qualified hardship, of course"

She looked me as she spoke clearly and slowly. .

"Fernando, my grandma sold her house here in Maryland 3 years ago and moved to Florida . .

She paid $220,000 CASH FOR HER HOUSE in FLORIDA!"


"I think, my grandma's screwed"


This is one of the reasons that I have embraced short sales early on. . it helped me understand the tremendous impact of the real estate market in people's lives.. .and my participation could be a difference in some people we touch everyday.
