My House Is Not Ready To Sell Means I Am Embarrassed

You want to sell your house and find something for your changing needs and desires, but you think that your house is not ready to put on the market. In other words, you are too embarrassed to let people see how you have been living.

You are embarrassed that over the last 10 years you have not:

  • trimmed and pruned the bushes and trees on your lot or edged along the fence or along the sidewalks;
  • maintained the fence in your yard which is rotting and starting to fall over;
  • reattached the drain spouts which have detached at the midway point or cleaned the gutters to allow for a free flow of rain water from your roof;
  • caulked around the windows and doorways or even around the flashing at the chimney, which is now leaving a water stain on the living room ceiling;
  • fixed the dent in your garage door where your son and his friends pounded it too many times while playing basketball;
  • painted the trim, which is now down to the bare wood;
  • cleaned your carpet which has grease stains from your oily driveway and food stains from those Sunday afternoon football parties;
  • re-caulked the tub in your bathroom or even cleaned the scum and mold that has built up all over the tub and the walls;
  • painted or cleaned the walls which have smudges, holes, and blemishes all over;
  • taken care of that smell of mold and mildew in your basement;
  • updated any of your appliances or systems;
  • and on and on.

There is no way that you can take care of all of these things now that you want to sell. You don't have the time or the money.

There is no way that you will get the average price of the neighborhood houses, of say $300,000 like your neighbors who have their pristine house on the market.

There is no need to be embarrassed. There is no need to be embarrassed for just being yourself. You lived this way for 10 years so why be embarrassed now.

Of course, you should, also, not expect to get $300,000 for your house like your neighbor. However, your neighbors, fools that they were, spent $100,000 over the last 10 years in up keep and maintenance and time while you enjoyed yourself.

You can still put your house on the market, but just realize that it should go on the market for $200,000 instead of $300,000.

Keep in mind, you will not be losing money by not being able to sell at $300,000, because, remember, you did not spend $100,000, over the last 10 years like your neighbors did.

So stand up and be proud of who you are. You are not going to fix that house for the market. Sell it like it is for the lower price, while secretly realizing that you will be netting just as much money as your foolish neighbor.
