I was out to dinner with my husband last night in a very nice restaurant. When we received the check we were ready to go and I did what I never do - handed her the credit card without looking at the check. Those of you who know me would gasp, but I decided, hey let's just get it done. When the bill came it was about 20% more than we thought it should be.
My husband and I went through the items we had and added it up in our heads. Hmmm....maybe the restaurant which we were new to added the tip in the check.
I asked the waitress to see the check as she didn't return it with the credit card statements to make sure I hadn't forgotten something or was planning on tipping twice.
She took a few minutes to bring it back and asked for my credit card so she could correct the check. She had double charged us for a menu item.
Her very clever comeback was "way to go, what a great eye you have, thanks for helping me find that mistake".
I couldn't help but smile and be disarmed. Very clever comeback indeed. She left me feeling good and not bad with a few simple words.
