The other day I was doing some previewing of homes in an area for my Aunt who lives in Silver Spring, MD. I had been in her home lots of times, but until I went into her neighborhood and looked at homes in the area. It was certainly an interesting tour for me.
I now know about the area called Franklin Knolls. It is an area that is just south of Four Corners ... where University Blvd and U.S. 29 come together. It is a quaint little area. The homes are post-World War II era homes. Many of these homes, as much of Silver Spring, were built when the troops were coming home in WWII and the Federal Government was expanding. You have to remember that Congress was a part-time job (it still seems that way) until Truman felt the need because of the issues being faced by the nation to make it into a full-time job (yeah, sure).
Many of these homes (and my Aunt is one of them) were built for these folks. The homes have 3 to 4 bedrooms, 2 bath ... split level . . . a bath on the upper bedroom level and a bath in the den area of the home. In many of these homes the kitchen is off of the family room (den). The homes seem to be built solidly.
The biggest problems with these homes is that they have huge yards (perfect for families) but they do pose a problem for older folks who can't get out and do yard work. The homes are close to 495 (the beltway), close to Virginia, close to shopping, everything. You can't walk to the subway but you can catch a bus up on University that will get you to the subway straightaway. These are very commutable communities.
