Silver Spring, MD City History

The town of Silver Spring is located in Montgomery County, Maryland. Just inside the beltway, it is the third most populous area in the state of Maryland. Founded in 1840 by Francis Preston Blair, it gets its name from a mica-flecked spring that flowed through the south side of town. He was so captivated by the spring’s beauty; he decided to build his house near it and named it Silver Spring. Now dry, this spring is still visible at Acorn Park.
