It's pool season here in Maryland and with the scorching heat we've been experiencing most people can't wait to get into the water to cool off.
Every year I watch the heartbreaking news of someone drowning during pool season.
Water Safety Tips
Supervision is Critical - Always watch children very carefully when they are near or in water. DO NOT rely solely on the lifeguard to watch your child.
DO NOT Swim Alone - Always swim with someone else who can help you in the event of an emergency.
Learn CPR - These CPR skills could save someone's life while waiting for paramedics to respond
Do Not rely on inflatable products to keep a child safe - These toys are not to be used in place of a life vest.
Pools should be completely fenced - The fence should be tall enough so that a child cannot easily get over. Also the latches for the pools should be complicated enough that children will not be easily able to open them and placed out of there reach.
Ensure that Hot-tubs & Whirlpools are securely covered when not in use.
Always wear life vests when boating even if everyone knows how to swim.
Pay attention to weather reports whenever you are on the water.
Follow posted signs on beaches, etc that describe current water conditions.
Avoid swimming when rip current are present. - If you are caught in a rip current attempt to swim parallel to the shore until you are free of the current and then swim towards the shore.
Avoid Alcohol whenever you are in or around the water and certainly whenever you are supervising other people in the water.
Let's be safe this year and have a wonderful Summer!
