Today was another gorgeous fall day here in Auburn Maine! A perfect day to visit one of the local Maine Apple Orchards for some pickin', eatin', and just plain good old fashion fun!
We didn't have to travel far...just around the corner and down the road a bit to Wallingford' Fruit House at 1240 Perkins Ridge Road here in Auburn. There are soooo many great ones to choose from, but this orchard is the closest to our home and to be honest, one of our favorites.
For the whopping investment of 99 cents/pound you can ride the wagon through the orchard, bags in tow, and pick (and eat) 'til your heart's content. Some people just couldn't wait to take their first bite of a truly fresh and juicy Maine apple, but I must admit, I resisted since guilt would overcome me if I didn't pay for them first...but I do think the orchard owners understand the temptation and don't mind.
The trees are tagged with colored ribbons to indicate the variety and there are plenty left. Don't wait too long though, the weather is quickly changing and the fruit house will close after October 31st.
Wallingford's also has a large area they call "The Backyard" where children (of all ages) can pet and feed the farm animals, climb on creative playground features, and enjoy a corn maze. There is also a pick your own pumpkin field with great pumpkins for just 25 cents/pound.
No trip to Wallingford's Fruit House is complete without sampling some of their fresh made donuts and cider. We just HAD to pick up a dozen donuts and a half gallon of cider on the way out! There is also a wide variety of home made fudge, apple crisp, and the most incredible apple dumplings and pie you have ever tasted! (shhh...don't tell my mother I said that)
