There are many non-profits out there in the world that deliver varying degrees of good to the world. There are even fewer yet that make an immediate impact to your local area in something that directly affects you. Motor City Blight Busters (MCBB) does all of that and more. They were founded by John J. George who was fed up with seeing blighted houses in his Detroit neighborhood that not only became a haven for criminal activity but also became a focal point for bringing down the neighborhood. How motivated would you be to keep your house and landscaping up if there was a burned out house right next door? John explained it to me by relating it to cancer. If you don't get rid of the blight early, it's going to spread throughout the whole neighborhood and become a much larger problem. Well, John and his organization have been getting rid of the blight and stopping it in many neighborhoods for 18 years by working mostly with volunteers. They have done everything from rehabbing houses, tearing down burnouts, boarding up houses, painting murals, thanksgiving dinners, creating community centers, community programs, creating homeowners, to one of their biggest accomplishments, creating Angel's Night. The night before Halloween used to be a night filled with firebombed houses and destruction in Detroit but that has all changed with a full volunteer effort in patrolling neighborhoods.
MCBB is truly a great organization that not only helps Detroit neighborhoods to become thriving communities with a sense of pride for its inhabitants but it also helps the region. As we get more neighborhoods and the City of Detroit overall to turn around, we increase the economy and local real estate of South East Michigan as a whole.
MCBB needs our help. Because they are a non-profit, they do rely on volunteers. Jeremy Burgess is coordinating an event for us that should be on Saturday July 19th (check for confirmation in the upcoming weeks). This is a professional organization so they will have all of the tools and gloves needed to do the work and we will provide the food and drink. We will most likely be helping to tear down a house, paint a house and just general sprucing up of landscaping and exterior. THIS WILL BE A GREAT EXPERIENCE! It will not only be a chance to give back but a great chance to help improve South East Michigan's real estate market! Make sure you add it to your calendar now and look for upcoming e-mails!
