In 1998, Sport Valley Farm, a 120 acre equestrian facility, renowned for its palatial red estate house, stables, barns and outlying paddocks was purchased by Kerm Campbell and Donald Coe. Shortly after purchasing the farm, the partners realized that this property presented a unique opportunity to create a world class winery and agricultural destination in Northern Michigan. The name Black Star Farms was taken from the stylized star in the marble foyer of the estate house. Black Star Farms employed Lee Lutes as their winemaker.
The "lake effect" climate enables the growing of grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Franc, and Pinot Noir. Their fruit is sourced from both it's own vineyards and local grower partners.

The Hearth & Vine Vineyard Cafe offers a variety of wonderful menu options from wood-fried pizza to yummy baked goods.
The Inn at Black Star Farmsbed and breakfast offers eight luxury rooms that include private bath, in-room satellite television, complimentary reserve wine tasting and a bottle of red house wine, hospitality hour, and a full gourmet breakfast. Massage services, romance equestrian packages are also available. Dinner available on weekends by reservation.
