Simple Summer lawn care tips to help keep your grass green this year

Summer is alot different than the Spring and Fall for your lawn. Just like many of us it tires with all the heat and lack of rain. The main thing of summer lawn care is simple.... keep everything simple and to a minimum. If you follow these simple tips you can help your lawn maintain its beauty.

First and most important is watering, when it gets hot just like you your lawn needs a good drink of water. Please follow this link for tips on Proper Watering Techniques. For those of you who know you will be under a watering restriction or unable to water at all do to droughts, you should apply a drought resistance Summer fertilizer, towards the late spring early summer while you are still able to water or are getting rain, so you can help the fertilizer work itself into the ground and give it a little time to get into your lawns root system. Follow the directions according to manufacturers specifications, cover your skin, and take a shower after applying the fertilizer to wash all those chemicals off you if you do it yourself.

The second most important thing you can do is scale the mowings back a bit, especially if you cannot water your lawn. If you notice yellowing or browning (over the whole lawn, not just spots as spots are generally either grubs, or disease). Generally during the hot and dry months you can mow your lawn every 2-3 weeks especially if you cannot water. It you are able to water your lawn, and it is staying green you can generally continue mowing every week, but as I said if it starts yellowing/ browning take some time off between mowings. Also keeping yard activities to a minimum will help your lawn stay green and beautiful. Don't get me wrong occasional activities are fine, but daily tackle football games on the front lawn should be held at the neighboors :-D

Late spring/ early summer is also a great time to do a grub preventative/ killing treatment (ie. Scott's Grub-X, which is the best I have found so far and you can put it down yourself, available at home depot/ lowes, many hardware and lawn care landscaping supply stores). Grubs can also bring moles as moles eat grubs... keep their food out of your lawn and you are less likely to have them in your yard.

Follow these simple tips and it will greatly help in keeping your lawn beautiful and green this summer. Summer is also a great time to focus on that landscaping project you have been meaning to get to ;-)
