I can only imagine how much snow December COULD have brought us this year.... For real. I am watching ALL my precious white melt in my front yard as I write this very post. Truly, we started with two feet of snow this week. Taking the kids sledding was great entertainment as they waded through thigh high snow in their itty-bitty boots and plumped up snow pants.
Today is quite a different story. Seemingly overnight a good third of our snow has been condensed by the consistant drizzle of RAIN! Who's ever heard of rain storms in Minnesota in December? Okay, so I know that it happens but it's not supposed to.
One can only imagine that God forgot what state he was in when delivering this week's weather report. (Maybe Tennessee?) And, hopefully they aren't experiencing Minnesota weather - that would be quite a shock!
My poor car that broke down on Christmas Even has been sitting in my parent's drive and the tow truck came to take it to the shop this morning. I almost felt bad for the driver as he was trying to dodge the foot-deep puddle of cold water under the car. Really? Isn't that more like a March issue? I was completely soaking wet in the ten minutes that I waited for my car to load the truck. But, it wasn't anything compared to the poor driver who was tucking chains under my wet wet truck.
What is January going to bring? Typically bitter cold and miserable - one may never know. If it continues as this week has we should have a really great month to play outside in the snow!!! That is... if there is any snow left.
The problem with this weather is that ground is still frozen so the water is just sitting in the streets. Many storm gutters are blocked and the water has nowhere to go. If the temps drop we could suddenly live in one great big ice rink... If it warms further we'll have nothing of white winter left.
And, passing the Elk River today reminded me that the lakes may not be reliable either. One must maintain caution when on the ice! Especially with the rain melting away at the top layers of snow and ice. There were snowmobile tracks on the river that are now all water. Makes for easy ice fishing, but hopefully we won't have to do much "people" fishing along with it.
While trying to sort out God's thoughts on the weather I think that I'll stay inside where I'm warm and dry. Then, when the weather decides to do something fun - we will really really enjoy!
Happy January!
