It is not known if the birds will migrate to the Gulf Coast area where the oil spill could harm them or if they will seek out the cleaner waters of the Atlantic Coast. Our loons will migrate in October or November. Adults will return in April, but the new hatchlings will stay south for their first year. Check out the Live Loon Cam
The Mn DNR has tagged 10 loons with GPS transmitters so they can track them and study the effect of the Gulf Oil Spill on the health, migration patterns, and survival of our beloved State Bird, the Common Loon.
