Update on Highwoods, Plaza Zoning & the City Council in Kansas City Missouri

I was shocked when learning that two people I know support the Highwoods plan for tearing down the Neptune and building an office tower in its' place. Listening to their perspective made me realize that they do not have accurate information.

No one is against developing the Plaza to support growth, business development and jobs.

What many people are not aware of is that there are multiple sites on the Plaza which are suitable for supporting a building of the size and structure that Highwoods has proposed to go in place of the Neptune. The building codes and Plaza Plan have several places for an office tower which would fit in nicely with existing structures and also accommodate the additional traffic.

The only problem with the other sites, from Highwoods' perspective, is that they don't own those sites so couldn't make a boatload of money if the building went in there.

The City Council's job is to represent the best interests of all of its' citizens; not the financial interests of one company.

Voters in Kansas City have already told the City Council that we want to follow the Plaza Plan. We want to be able to get to St. Luke's Hospital if we need to. We want to use the parking spaces that our tax dollars already paid for.We expect the City Council to protect our property values. We want the City Council, including Mayor Sly, to grow Kansas City in a conscientious and responsible manner.

JC Nichols explains how parking relates to business. For those of you who don't know, the Country Club Plaza has been used as a model of successful mixed-use urban development by architects and city planners around the world. It's a well-thought out plan that works.
