It's pronounced Bow Chee'

OK, I think almost everyone says it wrong, you hear Botch e' ball all the time.

Bocce Ball, you don't see it that much these days, but when you do you should stop and play. They used to have a Bocce court in north county in Hazelwood, but it fizzled long ago.

Now on the hill, Bocce is still played, and at Milo's it is a way of life. Milo's is a cool bar on Marconi and Wilson on the hill with 2 outside (but under cover) Bocce courts. They have great food and on Wednesday they have the best chicken spiedini you will ever find anywhere.

If you get a chance stop in, and play some Bocce (during the day they don't have leagues, at night it's hit and miss) have some food, just don't try to move the outside tables (they are concrete and heavy) and don't call it Botch e.

Not only do I not know how to say it, I don't even know what it is, but I am sure it is fun   :)

Thank you so much for the pronunciation correction.  Bocce is popular in Long Island, and while I still have no idea what it is, except that it's got to be fun, knowing how to pronounce it helps!!  We have a bocce court (?) at the clubhouse- when it's complete, I'm going to watch the homeowners play.

Yikes! I have been pronouncing this word wrong for only 15 years! The sad thing is....so has everyone else that I know!  Thank you for the correction! I first ran into the term in Minneapolis. A very upscale bar in downtown opened with the name of Bocce Bar...and everyone pronounced it "botch e" . Boy did we ever botch that!  Thanks again!

If you are ever in St. Louis you can get yourself a tee shirt at Milo's saying something like

"It's pronounced Bow ce"

In the game you have one little ball and 2 sets of 4 bigger balls (the big ones are like coquet balls only a tad bigger). Whoever starts rolls the small ball to the other side of a long court (think shuffle board) that is made of grass or crushed stone or compact dirt. The object of the game is to get the bigger balls close to the little ball. You take turns rolling your big balls, and it is a lot like shuffle board where you are blocking the other team or trying to knock them off of the court. The balls that are closest to the small ball, but inside of the other guys closest ball count one point each.

It is a great game to play while one consumes beer. Which can lead to making up ones own rules.

I grew up in dogtown, and have spent a fair amount of time on the hill. Bocce is fun, anyone can play, you don't have to be an athlete....what more can I say. Next post  toasted ravioli or gooey butter?
