Block Scheduling in Wake County Public Schools

Block Scheduling in Wake County Public Schools

Block scheduling in Wake County Public Schools is a new concept for many residents new to Cary NC and surrounding areas.

Let me clarify what block scheduling is and why we have block scheduling in Wake County Public Schools.

  • With block scheduling instead of a student taking 6 classed each year the student will take 4 classes each term in 90 minute blocks of time.
  • Block scheduling allows a total of 8 classes a year resulting in 32 credits instead of the normal 24 credit opportunities over 4 years.
  • Students wanting to enroll in additional upper-level courses have that opportunity with block scheduling.
  • The school is able to offer more elective courses with block scheduling.
  • Students who "start behind" in middle school will have a greater chance to complete an advance course of study.
  • Block scheduling allows students more flexibility in their schedule when pursuing a long-term course of study ie: band, foreign language
  • Students needing to repeat a class will have ample time.

Block Scheduling in Wake County Public Schools

From a personal point of view, my two girls went through middle school and had one period a week on block scheduling. This allowed the student a chance to get used to the new schedule they would have in high school. In high school it was a bit of an adjustment, especially Freshman year, and especially first period. Like anything else the block scheduling in Wake County Public Schools is something they became accustomed to just like off-campus lunch. (That's a whole different blog.) In the end, the block scheduling prepared them for college and the time management associated with the longer classes. As a parent, I'm a fan of block scheduling in Wake County Public Schools
