Raleigh Named Top 10 Great Cities for Families

Happy Family

When I moved to the Triangle in 1991 my daughter was just three weeks old. We were moving from Houston, Texas and I had grown up in the Big D(Dallas, Texas) so I wasn't sure what to think when arriving in the small town of Chapel HIll, North Carolina. My husband was in graduate school and I wanted to raise my daughter in a safe, well planned, clean community.

To my pleasant surprise I fell in love with the Triangle and the rest is history. My daughter is now a sophomore in college back in Texas but I feel the great education and safe environment that she grew up in can directly correlate with her good grades and adjustment into college life.

That said, I'm not the only on that thinks that the Triangle is a great place to live and a great place to raise a family. Kiplinger Magazine, a regular fan of the Triangle, has chosen the Triangle as one of it's Top 10 Great cities for raising a family.

Here are the main reasons sited as being chosen for the coveted list:

  • Employment is up
  • cost of living is down
  • The region is also home to more acres of parks per capita than most cities of its size.
  • The Wake County School District is strong, too, with 77 schools of excellence and distinction -- the highest designations in North Carolina
  • Higher Education is dominent with three majo universities including : the top-notch University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill which is perennially No. 1 on Kiplinger's list of Best Values in Public Colleges, N.C. State is #10, and Duke University

If you are thinking about relocating make sure you include the Triangle area on your list!
