HIGH IN THE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS of Western North Carolina, the village of Cashiers, 60 miles southwest of Asheville, makes a bucolic setting for secluded Wade Hampton Golf Club. Encircled by 28,000 acres of national forest and rising 3,500-4000 feet above sea level, this area has retained the same natural beauty described by Thomas Wolfe in Look Homeward Angel.

Wade Hampton Golf Club

Cashiers has been a favorite vacation spot for generations. Southern families are attracted by the cool summers and dramatic views of these mountains. In the early days, fishing was said to be the main attraction; golf was just one of several sporting activities along with boating, riding, and tennis. Later the popularity of golf grew and many courses were built near Cashiers in the 1950s and 1960s. The area became widely known for the quality of its resort and retirement golf.

With the increasing number of golfers attracted to Cashiers the need arose for something different—a true golf club, one devoted exclusively to the game with a course designed for the dedicated golfer and maintained to a high standard. Thus, the Wade Hampton Club was born.

THE WADE HAMPTON GOLF CLUB opened in 1987 and is a 700 acre private equity golf club with a Tom Fazio designed championship golf course and residential community.

Wade Hampton is consistently ranked high in the top 100 ranking of all the major golf publications and is considered by most rankings, the #1 mountain golf course in the world. Currently, it is ranked as the #2 residential golf community in the US. The Tom Fazio designed course is the highest ranked mountain course in the world, that's #1 Mountain Golf Course in the World, by virtually every poll and is fifteenth nationally by the highly regarded Golf Digest rankings. Golf Week magazine has ranked it the #2 residential course in the nation, as was #1 for the previous four years. It features dramatic views of Chimney Top, Rock and Whiteside mountains, yet it is very walkable with moderate change in elevation on the course.

Designed by Tom Fazio and opened in 1987, Wade Hampton Golf Club in Cashiers, N.C., has been awarded the 2013 USGA Senior Amateur Championship. It will be the club's first USGA event. (Courtesy Wade Hampton G.C.)

THE RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITY at Wade Hampton is limited to 300 homes. This carefully designed residential community has narrow tree-canopied roads that wind through lush natural vegetation. A carefully structured development plan assures that the integrity of golf is not compromised by residential development; accordingly, homes with golf course frontage are confined to the perimeter of the course. No hole has homes on both sides and many holes have no development at all. Since the course lies on the valley floor of a mountain “bowl,” some of the most dramatic homesites are back away from the course on the surrounding ridges, with views of both the course and the mountain vistas beyond, Homesites range from three-quarters of an acre to five acres.

THE CLUB IS STRUCTURED as a private, member owned club with 300 golf members and no social members. Wade Hampton differs from other clubs in that it is strictly a golf club—there are no facilities for swimming, tennis or other sports and none are planned. There are, however, close relationships with several tennis and family clubs in the area which offer opportunities for membership.

As is the case with many true golf clubs, the clubhouse at Wade Hampton is unpretentious and understated in character. It serves as a rendezvous for post-golf activity and offers quality dining with a distinctive feeling of charm and mountain hospitality.

Wade Hampton Golf Club Welcome to Cashiers

THE SETTING FOR WADE HAMPTON has an interesting history. We know the Cherokee Indians spent time here, using the area for a summer hunting ground. Throughout the years arrowheads and other Indian relics have been found.

For over 150 years the land was owned by the Hamptons of South Carolina. Wade Hampton III, the most famous family member and the one for whom the Club was named, played a significant role in nineteenth century Southern history. Known as “The Giant In Gray” of the Confederate army, Hampton also served as governor of South Carolina and U.S. Senator. Hampton spent his summers here as a young boy and returned to this mountain retreat throughout his long and colorful life.

In 1922 the Hampton estate was purchased by Sylva industrialist E. Lyndon McKee who converted it into a summer resort, High Hampton Inn. An agreement in 1984 among Mr. McKee’s heirs allowed his grand children to acquire the undeveloped portion of the property to build the Wade Hampton Golf Club. McKee Properties has handled all real estate transactions and club membership since the club's inception.
