The widening would occur in both directions between I-77 Exit 23 in Huntersville Homes and Exit 28 in Cornelius Homes.
Cornelius Bromont, a partnership of Bromont Investments of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Carlsen Douglas Development of Huntersville, also wants to add an Exit 27 interchange at Westmoreland Road and widen U.S. Highway 21.
The proposal requires approval from the Federal Highway Administration, N.C. Department of Transportation and the Mecklenburg-Union Metropolitan Planning Organization.
The total cost of the highway improvements hasn't been disclosed. Cornelius Bromont says it would provide $4 million, and the rest of the costs would be funded through new property taxes generated by the project.
The Village At Lake Norman is to be developed on 102 acres south of Westmoreland Road in Cornelius Townhomes. Plans for the $300 million mixed-use development call for 695,600 square feet of retail space, 873,338 square feet of offices, 400 condominiums and two hotels totaling 350 rooms.
Construction on the road project and The Village At Lake Norman is slated to begin in September 2009. It will be completed in 2011.
