Charlotte NC Chosen for 2012 Democratic National Convention

Charlotte NC is in the spotlight today as the Democratic National Committee announced that Charlotte will be the host site for the 2012 Democratic National Convention. This is wonderful news for the City of Charlotte, as it will thrust the city into the national prominence as the host city, and will be a huge boost for the local economy. The convention begins the week of September 3, 2012.

In announcing the Charlotte selection via an e-blast, First Lady Michelle Obama said "I am thrilled to make sure you are the first to hear some very exciting news. Charlotte, NC will host the 46th Democratic National Convention in 2012. Charlotte is a city marked by its southern charm, warm hospitality and an 'up by the bootstraps' mentality that has propelled the city forward as one of the fastest growing cities in the South. Vibrant, diverse, and full of opportunity, Charlotte is home to innovative, hard-working folks with big hearts and open minds. And of course, great barbecue!"

NC Governor Bev Perdue joined in the praise for the Charlotte choice, "A ational political convention is a keystone event that will boost North Carolina's economy, while showcasing Charlotte and our state to the nation and the world. What they will see when they get here is what hundreds of businesses already know - Charlotte's smart investments in infrastruction, cultural attractions and amenities have produced a climate perfect for work and play."

Charlotte NC chosen for 2012 Democratic National ConventionThe choice of Charlotte NC for the 2012 Democratic National Convention signals that the Obama campaign and Democratic party will be focusing on North Carolina during the 2012 election, using the convention as an organizing tool to win the state in the general election. President Obama narrowly won North Carolina in 2008 by 14,000 votes.

Michelle Obama also announced that the 2012 convention will be organized a little differently. They will attempt to make it a grassroots convention, attempting to engage people in new ways. Dubbed the The People's Convention, the DNC and campaign organizers are seeking input from the public on new ideas for the convention.
