Oh dear, how to decide.
Charlotte is right in the middle of North Carolina, from east to west. That makes it really easy to get to the beaches of North or South Carolina or to the Appalachian mountains.
Which is better.
It's a good problem to have to ask that question. In terms of drive time, it is much quicker to get to the mountains from Charlotte. It is only about two hours to Asheville. It can be done mostly on interstates or divided highways.
However, the drive to Wilmington is four hours and much more difficult. It follows roads which are interstate quality in some areas but not in others. So there is a ton of slowing down and speeding up. Once you get to Wilmington, its great though. There are a ton of beaches and Wilmington has a few barrier islands and beaches that are fun to play on. It's a great place to score some awesome seafood, served just about any way you like it.
The mountains are fun too. There are all kinds of railroads and sightseeing to do once you get into the great smoky mountains. The best part about living in Charlotte is that you have the choice.
